What is a physician assistant? A physician assistant is a person who helps a doctor in giving medical care to his or her patients. He or she can also perform the medical practice but not without the supervision of the licensed physician.

A physician assistant does not need a medical license in order to practice his or her profession. However, he or she must work under the administration of a licensed physician. But he or she is also different from a nurse because he or she had been trained as a general practitioner in the field of medicine and patient care.

A physician assistant is almost like a doctor but without the license. He or she can perform most of the doctor's job. He or she can even write prescription medicines for a patient. You can probably call a physician assistant the jack-of-all-trades in medicine. He or she is a general practitioner in the field of medicine.

A physician assistant must be well – informed about the different medical conditions in order to give the proper medical care. However, a physician assistant is not a specialist. If a physician assistant finds it necessary, he or she should refer the patient to a specialist who can further examine the person's illness and give the right medication.

There is a strong demand for the physician assistant profession in United States. This is because of the benefit of the role the a physician assistant can play in the medical field. A physician assistant can hold more than one job in  the industry. This means he or she can work for more than one physician. This provides for greater job stability for most individuals working in the medical field.

Most hospitals employ physician assistants. They are also commonly available in HMO's and other public health clinics. Nursing homes and other health care agencies also enjoy the services of a physician assistant.

The demand for a physician assistant seems to be growing strong. This because a physician assistant can already provide the basic medical services as a licensed physician. But cost of labor of hiring a licensed physician would cost much higher than a physician assistant or general practitioner. That is why most health care agencies would prefer to employ the services of a physician assistant.

Being a physician assistant is definitely the best career in the medical field that one can land on. The cost of education may also not be as expensive as the licensed physician because you would not need to go through the licensure examination. You can easily land a job as a physician assistant and it pays a fairly good compensation. It is definitely on rewarding career.

There is often a misunderstanding about the profession of a physician assistant. Most people don't even consider the job as a profession at all. They often look down on people who works as a physician assistant. They think that the job of a physician assistant is only to hand the doctor his tools whenever he or she is doing an operation. A physician assistant is not just any ordinary laborer. He or she is also a medical professional. A person needs a college degree in order to become. Just as a nurse practitioner needs a degree to practice his or her profession, so does a physician assistant.

A physician assistant is not just a doctor's assistant. He or she is not a doctor's secretary in the office. The physician assistant works independently from the physician in the clinic. He or she receives his or her own patients to diagnose their illness and prescribe medications. He or she works just like a doctor except the surgery that a certain illness might call for.

Working under a licensed physician means that a physician assistant would need to communicate with the licensed physician for some advice on complex issues. But for minor cases and simple illness, the physician assistant can do all the medical treatment by himself or herself.
